Although All is Lost and A Most Violent Year helmer J.C. Chandor was planning to take on the true story Deepwater Horizon, TheWrap reports that he has split from project due to creative differences. Replacing him in the director’s chair is Peter Berg, who recently worked with headlining star Mark Wahlberg on another true story: 2013’s Lone Survivor.
Based on the true events that occurred on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon chronicles the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon and the extreme moments of bravery and survival in the face of what would become one of the biggest man-made disasters in world history.
Berg’s other directorial credits include Friday Night Lights, Battleship and Hancock. He and Wahlberg have also made plans to work together on a modern version of the 1960s science fiction series “The Six Million Dollar Man.” The film version, adjusted for inflation into The Six Billion Dollar Man, is set up through The Weinstein Company’s Dimension Films label with plans to shoot sometime this year.
Featuring a screenplay by Matthew Sand and Matthew Carnahan, Deepwater Horizon is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Look for it to hit theaters September 30, 2016.
